For a kid, Harry Potter has a lot of enemies. J.K. Rowling’s series of books about an 11-year-old orphan, a student at the fictional Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry, has engendered plenty of praise, criticism, debate, and hours of media coverage that has followed it all. At the core of criticism leveled against the series is its treatment of witchcraft and the occult. While many readers consider the books lighthearted fantasy in which a boy learns to harness supernatural powers, members of the conservative religious community have pointed out the Bible’s clear warnings against the practice of witchcraft. Next week Harry Potter will once again be the theme of a series of lectures and seminars by Wendel Amstutz, co-author of the book “To Harry or not to Harry”.
